Albert (von) Szent-Györgyi started his studies on biological oxidation processes – which also resulted in the discovery of vitamin C, for which he received the Nobel Price in 1937 – in the Laboratory of Physiology of the University in Groningen in 1922–1926. These studies were later continued in Cambridge (UK) and Szeged (Hungary). When he had already received the invitation as well as the financial means to come and work in Cambridge, he still did experiments in Groningen to find out whether the adrenal extract, isolated by him and later found to be a major source of vitamin C, contained the hormone essential for the survival of cats whose adrenals were removed. He was rather upset by the negative results of this experiment, judging by the recollections of a former student of his. This history constitutes an interesting example of the difference between serendipitous discovery and planned invention. 相似文献

Micronutrient deficiencies affect approximately 3 billion people worldwide. Malnutrition hinders the development of human potential and social and economic development in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have made fighting micronutrient deficiencies, known as hidden hunger, a high priority. Deficiencies of the micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, and vitamin A, are the most devastating among the world’s poor. WHO emphasizes nutrient supplementation and food fortification to address the malnutrition. CGIAR has placed a greater emphasis on biofortification through the HarvestPlus challenge program, and improved micronutrient content of the staple crops (rice, wheat, maize, beans, cassava, pearl millet, and sweet potato) through breeding and biotechnological approaches. An excellent example of biotechnology application is the development of ‘golden rice’ with adequate levels of a provitamin A, β-carotene. The Africa Harvest and the BioCassava Plus programs, respectively, are developing sorghum and cassava with improved nutritional quality. Background
Breast milk is an important source of staphylococci and other bacterial groups to the infant gut. The objective of this work was to analyse the bacterial diversity in feces of breast-fed infants and to compare it with that of formula-fed ones. A total of 23 women and their respective infants (16 breast-fed and 7 formula-fed) participated in the study. The 16 women and their infants provided a sample of breast milk and feces, respectively, at days 7, 14, and 35. The samples were plated onto different culture media. Staphylococcal and enterococcal isolates were submitted to genetic profiling and to a characterization scheme, including detection of potential virulence traits and sensitivity to antibiotics. 相似文献86.

The corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) receptors show striking homogeneity throughout the vertebrate subphylum. In mammals, the CRF(1) receptor (CRFR(1)) plays an important role in mediating behavioral and endocrine responses to fear and stress. The specific roles of this receptor subtype in fear and stress reactions in non-mammalian vertebrates are largely unknown. Crucian carp displays the olfactory-mediated fright reaction, a stereotypic behavioral response to waterborne cues from damaged skin of conspecifics. This reaction shows several similarities to basic components of avoidance behavior in mammals. In the present study, we applied the non-peptide CRFR(1) antagonist, antalarmin, to crucian carp 1 h before exposure to conspecific skin extract. This treatment resulted in a suppression of the fright reaction. After skin extract exposure, antalarmin treatment also lead to lower plasma cortisol values, as compared to vehicle treatment. This suppression of the behavioral fright reaction and the stress induced rise in plasma cortisol in crucian carp suggests that the functions of the CRFR(1) are conserved by evolution. 相似文献

Male and female animals are not always complicit during reproduction, giving rise to coercion. One example of a system that is assumed to involve sexual coercion is the mate herding behaviour of fiddler crabs: males push females towards the home burrow with the goal of forcing copulation at the burrow entrance. We recorded and analysed in detail the courtship behaviour of a North Australian species of fiddler crab Uca elegans. Courtship was composed of four main phases: broadcast waving, outward run, herding and at burrow display. During interactions males produced claw-waving displays which were directed posteriorly towards the female and which varied in timing and structure depending on the courtship phase. We suggest that courtship herding in U. elegans is driven primarily by mate choice for the following reasons, (1) females can evade herding, (2) no other reproductive strategies were observed, (3) males broadcast their presence and accompany courtship with conspicuous claw waves, and (4) the behaviour ends with the female leading the male into the home burrow. As an alternative function for herding in U. elegans we suggest that the behaviour represents a form of courtship guiding, in which males direct complicit females to the correct home burrow. 相似文献

The effect of disturbance on local communities may operate within the context of the spatial landscape. We examined the scale-dependent
effects of windthrow disturbance caused by a large typhoon on three arthropod communities in a temperate forest of Japan.
Canopy arthropods were collected by beating foliage, forest-floor arthropods were collected by sweeping the vegetation, and
flying arthropods were collected in Malaise traps. To assess the “functional spatial scale” at which arthropods responded
to tree-fall disturbance, the gap rate was quantified at different spatial scales by sequentially enlarging the radius of
a circular landscape sector in 10-m increments from 10 to 500 m. We then analyzed the responses of order richness and abundance
to the gap rate for each arthropod community. The spatial scale of the significant best-fitting model, which was selected
from the models fitted to the gap rate at stepwise spatial scales, was regarded as the arthropod-specific functional spatial
scale. Arthropod order richness was not dependent on the gap rate. In contrast, arthropod order abundance depended significantly
on the gap rate in many orders, but varied in the response direction and functional spatial scale. These order-specific, scale-dependent
responses to tree-fall gaps could complicate interactions among organisms, leading to complex community organization. An understanding
of the spatial processes that link the use of space by organisms with the spatial scale at which ecological processes are
experienced is required to elucidate the responses of populations, communities, and biotic interactions to disturbances in

Callus cultures derived from leaf segments of chrysanthemum cultivar ‘Snow Ball’ which was susceptible to Septoria obesa were successfully used for in vitro selection for resistance to this pathogenic fungus. Resistant cell lines were selected by culturing callus on growth medium
containing various concentrations of S. obesa filtrate. Resistant calluses obtained after two cycles (30 d each cycle) of selection were used for plant regeneration. About
30% of the plants regenerated from the resistant calluses and 70–80% of the plants raised from cuttings had acquired considerable

Vertical ionization energies (VIEs) of medazepam, nordazepam and their molecular subunits have been calculated using the electron
propagator method in the P3/CEP-31G* approximation. Vertical electron affinities (VEAs) have been obtained with a ∆SCF procedure
at the DFT-B3LYP/6-31+G* level of theory. Excellent correlations have been achieved between IEcalc and IEexp, allowing reliable assignment of the ionization processes. Our proposed assignment differs in many instances from that previously
reported in the literature. The electronic structure of the frontier Dyson orbitals shows that the IE and EA values of the
benzodiazepines can be modulated by substitution at the benzene rings. Hardness values, evaluated as (IE − EA)/2, follow the
trend of the experimental singlet transition energies. Medazepam is a less hard (i.e., less stable) compound than nordazepam. 相似文献
